A PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) online shopping report (published July 2011) says there has been a 13 per cent increase in the amount spent online last year, and predicts it will rise to $21.7 billion by 2015. This report also estimates just under half of these purchases are made overseas.

Even the most expensive of eCommerce solutions pale in comparison. We believe that an effective and successful online store is more than just shipping and stock control, and will still require a lot of hard work to be successful. However, doing this online is much less expensive, with a much woder reach.

An oft-overlooked aspect of doing business online is the added benefit of knowing more about your customer. Because you need to ship them their products, and they will often need to validate their credit card information by providing additional information, you gain an insight to your customers that isn’t possible in a physical store.

You can directly interact with these customers after they’ve purchased. For example, you know what they’ve purchased in the past, how often they purchase and the average price of what they’re buying. This gives you much better information to direct target your customers, and allows you to engage with them to bring them back.
